Fulmar Road One Book One School

Fulmar Road Elementary School students eagerly gathered in the cafeteria on March 24, excited to find out which special book the entire school would read together. The stage was set with large parcels wrapped like chocolate bars, and Principal Gary Chadwick entered the room dressed as Willy Wonka, adding to the anticipation.

Once everyone was seated, a special video played on the big screen. Filmed by education technology specialist Jay Zides, the video showed staff members discovering golden tickets around the school. When the book was finally revealed, “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” by Roald Dahl, the room erupted into cheers and applause.

“Each year, we select one book to celebrate, but more importantly, we’re celebrating the joy of reading,” Chadwick said. “Reading sparks your imagination, helps you grow as a student in all subject areas, and can make you a kinder, more compassionate person.”

Students will read the book in class with their teachers and at home with their families. In collaboration with STEAM teacher Mimi Murphy, Fulmar Road staff and parents recorded chapters in both English and Spanish. This allows students to listen to the book online, ensuring everyone can enjoy the story, no matter their age or language preference.

To celebrate the book and build excitement, Fulmar Road kicked off a Spirit Week with the theme of “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.” Monday’s theme encouraged students to wear their favorite hats, while Tuesday saw students dressed in purple, yellow or gold, just like Willy Wonka. Wednesday was Lollipop Day, where students wore tie-dye T-shirts, and on Thursday students came to school wearing their favorite pajamas, channeling beloved character Grandpa Joe. The week wrapped up on Friday with Gobstopper Color Wars, where each grade level wore its own unique color.

“I hope our students will enjoy reading ‘Charlie and the Chocolate Factory’ with us this week,” Chadwick said. “Selected by our site-based team, the book offers many valuable lessons such as the consequences of our actions, the importance of kindness and humility, the dangers of greed and the significance of family and good character.”

The school extends its heartfelt gratitude to the Fulmar Road PTO for their generosity in providing books for all the students, as well as to Allyson Fallman, Murphy and all the staff members who helped plan this special event.
