Lakeview Elementary School third graders are currently working on an engaging unit on China, exploring the country’s geography, economy, government and rich cultural heritage. As part of the lesson, the students enjoyed reading traditional Chinese literature that highlighted the nation’s history.
In an activity that celebrated the Lunar New Year, the third graders created colorful lanterns and crafted hats to wear during the celebration. They learned about the 12 animals of the Chinese zodiac and discovered that this year is the Year of the Snake. They also enjoyed traditional Chinese foods, using chopsticks to sample rice and tasting fortune cookies.
During the event, the students discussed the customs associated with the Lunar New Year, including the tradition of removing bad luck and ushering in good fortune for the year ahead. A third grader named Lucas, shared a blessing for good luck in the New Year with everyone in his classroom.
The third grade team expresses their thanks to Mahopac restaurant Ming Hing for their generous donation of chopsticks and fortune cookies and the Lakeview Elementary School PTO for providing rice for all of the students.
