After classes let out on Tuesday, 18 teams of Mahopac High School students tried their hands at some gingerbread-based engineering at the annual Gingerbread House Competition hosted by the high school German Club.
“Students are allowed to build a homemade cardboard base in advance,” said German Teacher and event organizer Katrina Bauerlein, “but everything visible must be both edible and constructed at the event.”
Bauerlein said the German Club was also giving back to those in need.
“This year, we also returned to our pre-COVID tradition of collecting food pantry donations from each team and will be donating about 60 food items to the Community Food Pantry in Yorktown Heights.”
There was stiff competition this year, with many teams choosing to compete in the creative category whose theme was “movies.” Cinematic works from The Wizard of Oz to The Shining to The Barbie Movie were rendered in gingerbread. Many of the teams had no affiliation with the German Club but wanted to participate nonetheless. Check out some of our winning builds and their teams.
